James Rentschler

    James Henry Rentschler, 66, of Howard died Friday, May 9, 2014 on the family farmstead northwest of Howard, due to a farming accident.

    James Henry Rentschler was born April 24, 1948 at Madison, South Dakota to Henry and Maybell (Stransky) Rentschler. Jim grew up in the Howard area and attended grade school at Argonne and graduated from Howard High School in 1968.

    Jim then enlisted into the U.S. Navy on November 6, 1968. He served during the Vietnam War, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Navy Unit Commendation and Military Unit Citation with Gallantry Cross. Jim was Honorably Discharged on November 3, 1972.

    Jim returned to Howard where he farmed with his dad Henry until the time of his death. Jim was a lifetime member, being baptized on May 9, 1948 and confirmed on April 28, 1963 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Howard. Jim enjoyed serving his church and was on many church boards. He was also was a member of Nels Pederson American Post #145 - Howard and served as Legion Commander for numerous years and was the current commander at the time of his death. Jim was also the Miner County Commander and recently became Vice Commander of District 4. Jim enjoyed hunting, sporting clays. Jim loved to visit with his family and friends.

    Those grateful for having shared his life include his parents: Henry and May Rentschler of Howard, SD; three brothers: John (Lela) Rentschler of Howard, SD; Robert (Audrey) Rentschler of Sioux Falls, SD; Henry (Lou) Rentschler of Howard, SD;; four sisters: Helen (Larry) McDonald of Liberty, KY; Mary Rentschler of Howard, SD; Alice (Ken) Davidson of Atlantic, IA; Marilyn Rentschler of Mitchell, SD; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Jim was preceded in death by his brother: Thomas and niece: Stacy Brown.
